Jessica Rooney’s Story
From YogaMeetsTravel to JessMetJesus

Here I am in Bali, Indonesia, at the Tirta Empul Temple, a temple considered sacred by Balinese Hindu community. The temple has several “holy” springs and “chakra” fountains which are said to have been created by the god Indra and believed to be blessed water that could purify those who bathe there. Again my friends, deception. This is not immersing yourself in culture; it is  unacceptable to the one true living God and a counterfeit to the “living water” that Jesus talked about. (John 4:14)

After a decade of practicing yoga, teaching it, starting a brand and LLC, going to Bali and doing all of the New Age “spiritual” things, a demonic encounter with the Kundalini spirit changed everything (a concept I will explain further on in this story). It was a transformation only the Lord Jesus could accomplish.

Let’s start from the beginning—

Before Jesus, I only knew the traditional badge of honor religion. Raised Catholic, I heard about Jesus, but I didn’t know Him to be any different than Santa Claus, or the Easter Bunny. Church was the “right thing to do” and it honored family tradition. Playing college sports soon took priority, and I found myself living the only way I knew how: in the world (partying, promiscuity, immorality . . . all the things almost everyone does . . . until they’re born again). Yes, this is considered “normal” until you encounter the Living God and He flips your  world upside down (or really, right side up).

I said I believed in Jesus, but I didn’t know what that even meant. I didn’t know if Jesus was actually God. And if He was, I didn’t think anyone could or would know for sure until we died. l thought that we were all putting our chips in on taking our best educated guess at the options of “religion” offered and nobody truly could know the truth.  I wasn’t sure if the “devil” was legit or just some manmade character created to scare masses into submission. There was an undeniable “knowing” deep inside that there was a God, but I didn’t know why it had to be Jesus or even if it truly was Him.

All I had known or been exposed to was either strict, “lifeless” religion or casual, comfortable, lukewarm Christianity. This led me to stop going to church, and prayer became a faint “memory,” far from my first priority.  I also decided to search elsewhere—and “elsewhere” is where I fell into the shiny trap many do (even some fellow Christians )New Age Spirituality.

And to be fair, I had more tangible, spiritual encounters in “that space,” or on “that path,” than I had ever experienced at any churches I attended (up until that time). Witchcraft and divination have power. It’s real; it’s supernatural, but it’s wrong and you’re working for the wrong team, whether you realize it or not.

A friend of mine who I met through yoga giving me a tarot card and crystal reading. The following two Scripture passages prohibit this false spiritual practice / Deuteronomy 18:10-12 and Leviticus 19:31.

My doorway to deception was the practice of yoga. When you don’t know how real the devil is, you default to thinking, This must all be working for good and whoever God is—right? If anyone asked me if I believed in Jesus, I’d say, “Yes, I believe in Jesus,” and “Yes, I consider myself a Christian,” but with a more “spiritual” flair, of course. Right before the Lord pulled back the veil, I was blessed to answer some personal questions that made me put all this inner turmoil into verbal words. A friend of mine asked me, “Do you believe in Jesus?” I said, “Yes.” He then asked, “Do you read the Bible?” I said, “No, I have a relationship to God without it, and I think the Bible is outdated and indigestible.” (Phew, Jesus had some work to do in my heart!)

After finishing college and a devastating breakup, I was in search of a new identity. Yoga seemed like a healthy way to move my body and heal, both mentally and physically. After many hours of taking classes and falling in love with the practice, I decided to get more knowledge by taking my 200-Hour Yoga Teaching Training in Vinyasa Yoga. A few years later, I got into aviation as a flight attendant. From there, I built an online following known as “YogaMeetsTravel.”

As my two worlds of aviation and yoga merged, I traveled all over the country taking and teaching yoga and capturing pictures and yoga flows to pair. With that came my first LLC, merchandise, clothing,  yoga classes on demand, brand deals with various yoga companies, and studio partnerships. I thought I had it all. And by the world’s standards, I was close.

Then Jesus pulled back the spiritual veil on June 4th, 2022. I had a demonic encounter with something I call, “the kundalini spirit,” and the opposite of darkness defended me in my bedroom at 4am: Jesus Christ. I did not know what kind of demonic entity I had encountered at first; it wasn’t until a few months later that the Holy Spirit unpacked it all for me. Let me remind you, my choice of yoga was Vinyasa. However, the enemy takes whatever foothold he is given. The devil doesn’t care what kind of yoga you practice; he just wants the open door. Yoga provides access to spirits that are not the Holy Spirit. These entities may even call themselves “spirit guides,” and masquerade as love and light, until you confront them with “the way, the truth, and the life” . . . which is Jesus Christ (John 14:6).

1 John 4
Beloved, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits to see whether they are from God,

Teaching a group of friends and family yoga on a vacation shortly after I got my 200 hour YTT Vinyasa Yoga certification.

The night of the encounter, I was awakened in the middle of the night, and the Lord defended me through my own body. More specifically, my right hand was used to get rid of a demon that was on top of me. It was a black, shapeshifting entity that was resting on top of me like a cloak.  I simply felt like a bystander witnessing this dire situation. The Lord shot my hand out to the right side of the bed and in that split second, I was made aware of what was there, how it moved, and how it left.  It was like some force pressed “Rewind” and it immediately retreated backwards as fast as a lightning bolt beyond the palm of my right hand. (It coiled like a snake, and moved like a ribbon.)

The power moving through me met its opposite and just beyond the palm of my right hand there was a physical spark of light.  It was almost like a shock pop when you quickly shake out a blanket and see visual static—except there was no blanket, and this happened midair, where good had just met evil.

Completely shocked and stunned, the Lord’s Prayer surged up from deep within me as I shakily stuttered it out loud into the dark room. That night changed my life and got me searching for help and answers on another level. Surrounded by New-Age-minded friends, I was getting the wrong counsel. However, this encounter instantly increased my prayer life (originally out of fear). I questioned myself over and over, Why’d that happen to me?, What did I do to deserve that? Please keep that thing or anything like it away from me! It also immediately brought a Bible into my home. I hadn’t opened it yet, but I was hoping the presence of the book would help me – and it was a step in the right direction.

Through social media, the Lord began leading me to His Word. I soon realized that what I had witnessed in my bedroom had already been written, word for word, in this “ancient old book” I had just acquired. The Lord led me to many verses in the Bible to confirm who He was, what He had already done, and what He would do for me. I soon discovered the Bible is truly the Creator’s “Owner’s Manual.”

Here’s some of my favorite passages that highlight the recurring and personal theme of the right hand in Scripture:

 Psalm 91: 7-8
Though a thousand may fall at your side, and ten thousand at your right hand, no harm will come near you. You will only see it with your eyes and witness the punishment of the wicked.

Job 40:14
Then I myself will admit to you that your own right hand can save you.

Psalm 16:8
I keep my eyes always on the Lord. With Him at my right hand, I will not be shaken.

Exodus 15:6
Your right hand, Lord, was majestic in power.  Your right hand, Lord, shattered the enemy.

Isaiah 41:13
For I am the Lord your God who takes hold of your right hand and says to you, Do not fear; I will help you.

Isaiah 41:10
So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God.  I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.”

Habakkuk 3:4
His splendor was like the sunrise; rays flashed from his hand, where his power was hidden.

(This last verse was a visual reminder of the physical spark I witnessed just beyond the palm of my right hand.)

Another scripture that I didn’t find till later on shook me when I read it, because it perfectly described what I had tried to put into words:

James 1:17
Every good and perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of the heavenly lights, who does not change like shifting shadows.

* A shapeshifting shadow was quite literally what I witnessed on top of me.

Fast forward, after continuing on the hamster wheel of the world, and falling back into sin, I finally went back to church on December 4th, 2022, and gave my life to Jesus Christ.

Decked out in my lululemon yoga attire, representing a mandala on my hand and wearing mala beads. Full on yogi’d out.

I had nothing to lose, and my heart was in desperate need of repair. I was looking for a Savior in all the wrong people and places. Saying a prayer in the privacy of my heart, raising my hand against all pride, and coming to the end of myself, is where I truly found Him.

A month after I was saved and went back to church, I was zapped awake in the middle of the night. The best way I can explain it is like a laser beam pinged me awake with force while I was hard asleep and a word was engrained/branded on my forehead, in my mind. The verse was 1 Corinthians 12: Spiritual gifts.

I was a girl who didn’t know the Bible was made of books; I called them chapters. I didn’t know there were two letters to the Corinthians. I didn’t know the first book or the last book of the Bible, and I certainly didn’t know what this verse was that was sent to wake me up with a force like an AED shock to the chest. This hyper-supernatural period continued for nine months. I was in a fight for my soul as I was learning what doors I had opened to the enemy of God and how to close them. The Lord would show me the enemy’s rebuttal through dreams. I didn’t know if I would be awakened in the middle of the night with a Bible verse, a prophetic dream, a vision, or another demonic encounter.

Proudly repping my YTT certification with a false god in the background to pair. I’d like to title this one, “Father, forgive her, for she knows not what she does.”

As I began learning what was of God and what was not, I had not yet realized that yoga was an issue. I knew I had encountered a demon, but I did not understand why, nor did I know it had anything to do with “the kundalini spirit” or the workout I was practicing at the time.

Before we go further, let me share a bit more about the term “the kundalini spirit.” I practiced vinyasa yoga, so I had heard of kundalini as a type of yoga, but it wasn’t part of my day-to-day yoga experience or vocabulary.

However, if you look deeper into yoga, kundalini is described as a latent spiritual energy that lies coiled at the base of the spine, like a sleeping serpent. Yogis and gurus claim its awakening can lead to heightened spiritual awareness, profound energy experiences in the body, expanded consciousness, and inner transformation. The Hindus call it “Samadhi.” New Agers call it “Christ Consciousness.” This “awakening” is usually facilitated by meditation, pranayama (breath work), chanting, or yoga practices.

Let me assure you friends, it  is not a coincidence that “spiritual energy” is likened to “a sleeping serpent.”

As it reads in Revelation 12:9,

The great dragon was hurled down—that ancient serpent called the devil, or Satan, who leads the whole world astray. He was hurled to the earth, and his angels with him.

Some people insist there is no such thing as a “kundalini spirit”—and technically, in the Bible, that specific term cannot be found. However, there is strong logic why this terminology is legitimate.

Kundalini means “serpent power.” A serpent biblically is a symbol of evil, poisoning human beings with the venom of temptation and sin: certainly not a suitable symbol for the true Spirit of God.

All evil spirits are referred to in the Bible as “unclean spirits” and apparently, they can manifest in a variety of ways (Matthew 10:1). Sometimes they assume specific roles though they are not necessarily confined to those roles (like the evil spirit who became a “lying spirit” in the mouths of false prophets in 1 Kings 22). I now believe that people who indulge in yoga unknowingly invite evil spirits into their hearts and lives who manifest in this role of “a kundalini spirit” or what has been termed a “kundalini awakening.”

One Bible passage that is very revealing is Acts, chapter 16. A woman was following Paul, the apostle, declaring publicly that he and Silas were “servants of the most high God” who were showing people “the way of salvation” (Acts 16:17-18). Strangely, what the woman was saying was correct, but she was uttering these prophetic statements under the power of an evil spirit. Eventually Paul became so annoyed that he cast out that demon. The Bible identifies it a “spirit of divination” but in the Greek language, it is called a “pneuma puthon”—and from puthon we get the word “python” (so it was “a spirit of python”—which is an enormous serpent). That seems to be a close fit for what some people call “a kundalini spirit”—because kundalini means serpent power.

Regardless of the term you use, it is not of God; it is satanic in nature—something I encountered personally. But I learned a lesson, a very important life lesson—that yoga opens a spiritual door (along with many other far eastern and new age religious and spiritual practices), allowing evil spirits to gain access into our souls, There is only one power that can successfully resist and overcome these dark influences—the name of Jesus Christ.

Whether you prefer to call it an unclean spirit, a kundalini spirit, a spirit of witchcraft, a spirit of divination, an entity, or a demon is beside the point. What you need to know is you don’t want anything to do with it; yoga is an open door (along with many other practices), and the only power to properly take care of it is Jesus Christ.

With all that in mind, let’s get back to the story .  .  .  I went to a Bible study at my new church where there was a woman more versed in the faith and had the gift of seeing in the Spirit. This woman had shared different testimonies and words of knowledge (prophetic insights) she had received for others, and I felt a strong pull to seek her after the group ended. My purpose was to ask her if she might have any idea or advice on what I had experienced the evening of June 4th, 2022.

God took me from the peak of my Yogameetstravel brand and identity to a new born-again creation in Christ Jesus.

As I shared my encounter, and without her knowing anything about me and my personal life, she said “Oh I know what that’s from; that’s the kundalini spirit. Do you do yoga?” I instantly felt the blood leave my face. Thoughts immediately came to mind, Why on earth would she be asking me this? What does yoga have to do with demons? Why would that matter?

“Yes, I practice yoga religiously,” I answered.
“Did you hear what you just said?” she responded.
“But so much of my identity is in yoga.” I rebutted.
“Did you hear what you just said?” she responded.

Stunned and puzzled, I wrestled with God. God, if this is truly You,  please tell me and show me Yourself. You’ve woken me up with scripture; You can wake me up to tell me what is wrong with yoga, if that’s actually true.

Within the next two weeks I had my answer to what was wrong with yoga.  The Lord pinged me awake in the middle of the night with the words and answer: “Christ Consciousness.”

What is Christ Consciousness, you may be wondering, because I wondered too.

Christ Consciousness is the idea that you can achieve enlightenment by going inward, and doing all the things, and seeking the divinity within yourself versus the truth Himself and your savior. That Jesus was one of many ascended masters instead of the one true living God. A beautifully crafted lie by the devil himself.

“Christ Consciousness” is a western-sourced, new age term describing the far eastern concept of “God-consciousness”—the false, pantheistic belief that the “higher Self” in every human being is actually God. In other words, you have a conscious realization that you are God in manifestation (a totally heretical idea). In that mindset, Christ is a principle, not a Person, an essence of divinity that supposedly indwells everyone that needs to be awakened. Jesus is reduced to the role of a “Way-shower”: He was merely an awakened man who teaches all of us how to be awakened to our own divinity—but He is not presented as the Savior of the world, through His crucifixion and resurrection.

In my own words, it takes the feel-good parts of the message of Jesus Christ that everyone can generally agree on and it fails to mention the true Gospel.

Because we can never be reminded enough—the gospel is the good news that God became man in Jesus Christ. He lived the life we should have lived and died the death we should have died—in our place. Three days later, He rose from the dead, proving that He is the Son of God and offering the gift of salvation and forgiveness of sins to anyone who repents and believes in Him.

Jesus Christ is not a consciousness to be obtained. Christ-consciousness fails to acknowledge sin and our need for the Savior.

It was a process to pull me out of all that deception, but the Lord is faithful. Believe me when I say, “Nothing you are getting in the New Age (including a hot, sweaty, yoga class)  is worth compromising your relationship with the one true living God.” If this sounds nuts to you, please hear me out and at least genuinely pray on this. God is biblically defined as faithful, incapable of lying, and the ultimate source of truth, ensuring that His word, promises, and ultimate reality are revealed to those who seek Him.

I also want to mention that it is not a coincidence that many yoga studios are named after false gods/deities. The one I got certified at, for example, is Ra Yoga. It is named after the Egyptian sun god. I know other studios that are named after Kali, the Hindu goddess of destruction and death. So, to put this into a visual perspective, you’re going into a building named after a “god,” doing a practice (yoga) and the meaning of the word is to yoke.

Yes, yoga comes from the Sanskrit root yuj (meaning “to yoke” or “to unite”).

This might not seem like a problem until you know that Jesus Christ really is Lord, and all the other deities and false gods are spiritually backed by deception and demons. For Christians who hold that worship should be directed only to the God of the Bible, this is a red flag. Whether or not you believe it is an issue, it is a door you do not want opened.

Now I am the girl who won’t stop talking about Jesus. He delivered me from all forms of New Age deception—as well as alcohol, lust, pornography, fear, pride, lying and deceit, viruses, parasites—the list goes on. With that freedom came a calling from God—to expose the very deception He rescued me from.

Interceding for people I know—strangers and celebrities alike—is my new normal. Prophetic dreams are my new normal. Casting out demons, in dreams and in person, is my new normal. Testifying is both a duty and a privilege—and my passion.

The enemy masquerades as a messenger of “truth,” He is a professional, counterfeit con artist who comes only “to steal, and kill, and destroy” (John 10:10). Jesus is alive. Jesus is Lord and He wants your whole heart. No chanting, breath work, manifestation technique, sound healing, chakra clearing, meditation, numerology, horoscope, magical charm, or fortune teller can compete or suffice—only Jesus Christ can complete you and give you eternal life.

2 Corinthians 11:14
And no wonder, for Satan himself masquerades as an angel of light.

Similar to the promise of Ezekiel 13:20, I prayerfully speak over you:

May every snare in your life be exposed and brought to the light in Jesus’ name—and may He set you free.

“‘Therefore this is what the Sovereign Lord says: I am against your magic charms with which you ensnare people like birds and I will tear them from your arms; I will set free the people that you ensnare like birds.

My heart and my life are full of joy, peace, purpose and fulfillment now. “If anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; old things have passed away; behold, all things have become new” (2 Corinthians 5:17). And if I know anything, “I am sure of this, that he who started a good work in you will carry it on to completion until the day of Christ Jesus” (Philippians 1:6).

Jesus will meet you right where you are at, friend, and He will take you somewhere better than you can think or imagine. Trust Him and His Holy Spirit. Ask Him to come into your heart and your life today!

All His Best,

Jess
